”Omnis caro foenum”
All flesh is hay / grass – is a much-quoted phrase from the Old Testament, Isaiah 40:6
In the New Testament the phrase reoccurs in the First Epistle of Peter 1:24
In both cases the phrase is interpreted to mean that human life is transitory.
A painting from the album of a Flemish traveller in Elizabethan England, illustrating the inscription
‘Omnis caro foenum’. In the background is a river view of London, looking east towards old London Bridge.
Although geographically incorrect, the artist chose to include the Tower of London and St Mary Overie,
two major landmarks on the eastern boundary of the city.
